update

wow, it's been a while since I have updated this picture blog, right now I don't know if I've saved any of my recent work so that I can upload it... but looking through the posts from the past, it's been a year and a half to two years (I just remmeber 2007 as a start date, not sure if it was early, mid or late 07)since I started it with a portrait of one of my friends. I look back, and I can notice some rather substantial changes in my artwork. I've gotten better, and that's good, because that is what I am going for; improvement. however... I also noticed that I stopped drawing full bodies as much as I used to, and it has become troublesome for me to do so now.

lesson to be learned.... keep drawing? not sure if that's really it, but I figure it can't hurt to keep drawing anyway.

I found some WIP images from a few months ago, hope you like them. oh, and beast is copyright disney.

steam powered train

My friend asked me to create some images for his website, after some explaining of what he wanted, which was a sort of steam punk machine that was longer than it was short (dimensions were somewhat restrictive) I came up with a train. however, since then he and I have talked and came up with another idea which is more simple and fits his website better. not to say my work on the trains (I drew four or five concept sketches) went to waste, I have been pushing myself to master perspective even more now and this was just the excuse I was looking for to draw more often.

Perspective sketch 1

well, I found an artist who I really enjoy their style, and as I looked through their gallery I realized that they had an exceptional handle on perspective, and it really added to the viewing experience. having said all that, I promptly went through my art books and found a few pages which spoke of perspective, and the didn't give me very much to go off of, but this is what I came up with. I will use this sketch as a point of reference to gauge my progress.

drawings while camping

some of the sketches I did while on our family's fourth of July camping trip. I've decided to try doing detail sketches of mouths for a little while. then I'll move on to ears or noses or something of that sort. trying to draw them and express an emotion with them. of course, ears aren't going to be emotion so much...

shading practice

well, this picture took me around 30-40 minutes to do. I'm just trying to practice rendering semi-realistic faces without making them look flat. this is a first attempt and I'm fairly pleased with the result, I really could use some feedback on this one so that I can improve. thanks!

Self Portrait

it's been a while, and I have quite a few images I need to upload, but I'll do that some other time. I finished the first self portrait I've ever done last night, and want to share it. :D I hope you enjoy.

getting better?

well, I think I'm getting better at figure drawing. sometimes I wish I had a different teacher so I could learn another method, I feel slightly restricted by the way he is teaching us. but it works well enough I suppose. I just like test driving different methods and figuring which works best for me. anyway, here's the latest from my figure drawing class and another daily sketch page. (figure drawings have been removed due to mild nudity, they are in my private sketch books, viewable only to me and those which critique my work)

daily sketches

well, these are a few pages from my daily sketches. I try to do at least one page a day, little gesture drawings, cartoons, and some practice for figure drawings. I enjoy these drawings because I can do whatever I want with them. it's great.

sculpture update and figure drawing

well, I thought I'd show you some of the progress made on my sculpture, it isn't much because I got sick and cut my finger recently making it painful to sculpt. along with it is my most recent figure drawing, the teacher thinks I'm making a lot of improvement, I feel that I need to be making a lot more. but it will all come with practice. if I ever get around to taking pictures of my drawings soon you'll see some of my cartooning work. (I am particular to drawing cartoons, I really enjoy them.)

taking another look at my figure drawing, it's not terrible, but there are a lot of things I need to improve upon next time. she's extremely muscular and has a really broad torso and a small head... oh well. at least I can see those mistakes and know to work on getting it right next time.

sculpture

so I took a look back through this blog, and while there aren't very many entires (I'm planning on updated this blog at least weekly now) the entries in it are extremely diverse. from pencil to animation to sculpture. I think those are the only three things on right now... oh yeah, and a picture edit. anyway, I just wanted to say that before I posted images of a sculpture I'm working on right now.

Figure drawing

well, if any of y'all out there read my blog "reader beware" you know I'm taking my first art class. it's a figure drawing class, and so far there has been one class, in which Idrew these two pictures from a live model, I'm really happy with the way they turned out. sorry for the low quality image, I didn't want to deal with my scanner today. it's being a beast.

this is the first drawing done in the class.
and this is the second.

Principles of Animation

alright, I'm posting the assignments from my DGM 2620 class, or principles of animation I. I really enjoyed the class, but it felt like I didn't put as much into it as I could have because of math, english and biology. I'll write a blog about it later in my actual writing blog though. here are the assignments with a sentence or two about them.

this is the assignment that every single animation student does no matter what. a ball that is supposed to bounce. it's not very good, just as all of the following animations will be... but it's a learning process.

a paper airplane, simple enough... except the perspective. I didn't do such a great job on this one with the timing and spacing either. but again, a learning process.

the assignment was to make a doughboy character walk. (doughboy= cartoon anatomy, round, and a doughy looking) simple enough. though I went through so many different sets of keyframes before I just decided to get the assignment done on this one.

the brick drop was possibly the second or third assignment, I can't really remember. but it's the same idea s the ball bounce, get the timing and spacing down, except a brick doesn't bounce as much as a ball... it breaks. (for this assignment it does anyway.)

the flour sack was fun, it took me a short ammount of time because I was at home just doing straight ahead animation (start with frame 1, then draw frame 2, 3, 4... et al.) which is a lot funner than pose to pose animation (draw frame 1, then frame 12 or a frame where there is an important pose... then fill in the drawing in between.) so this one was fun for me.

this animation got the most of my attention and took the longest time to complete. I am still not happy with it, but the end of semester was coming up on me fast and I still had to animate two things. (I skipped the flour sack and moved to this.)

well, this was the final assignment. sort of. there was one more that he gave us to choose from, but due to time constraints I chose to do a jump. it's not perfect, like all the rest. but it's a start.
